Singapore Prize Winners Announced
The Singapore Prize was launched in 2014 to honour publications that have contributed significantly to our national identity, and has this year announced an impressive lineup of 12 top prizes across Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil languages – including comic or graphic novel honoring as well as literary translator awards for helping bring works by foreign authors into local readers’ hands.
Marylyn Tan was awarded first place in English poetry category and first female winner ever in its 28-year history for her groundbreaking debut collection Gaze Back, which covered topics ranging from menstruation to sexuality with ease and was highly praised by judges due to its “clarion call for gender and linguistic reclamation, searing confidence.”
Akshita Nanda’s debut novel Nimita’s Place by Straits Times journalist Akshita Nanda won the inaugural English novel award, depicting two women of diverse cultures dealing with society expectations in India and Singapore. Additionally, Esplanade Publishing House released their novel Kian Kok in celebration of SG50 while Wong Koi Tet’s Dakota explored lost housing estates where both authors resided during their childhood years.
This year’s leader of good award goes to an individual who has spent four decades championing senior volunteerism as chairman of RSVP Singapore (The Organization of Senior Volunteers). His advocacy inspired many seniors to contribute meaningfully through volunteering, while serving on advisory committees of numerous charities and public service organisations. Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence presented him with the prestigious accolade during today’s DTP Awards ceremony.
