The Sidney Prize and Other Prizes for Students at the University of Sydney

The Sidney prize recognizes journalists whose stories successfully expose social and economic injustice, leading to meaningful public policy changes. It was named in memory of Sidney Hillman, former President of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America – an predecessor union for Unite Here and Workers United SEIU. Since 1950, its foundation has awarded over $900,000. Members include former leaders from both unions along with left-leaning celebrities like Danny Glover.

Additionally, the University offers numerous undergraduate prizes. Some require applications, while others don’t; all awards appear on students’ transcripts and are celebrated at an awards ceremony annually. Some prizes are specifically designated “signature prizes” of English; others recognize academic excellence across disciplines.

Established in 1968 and in honor of Sidney Edelstein – an expert on dye history and process development who founded a specialty chemical manufacturing firm and received SHOT’s Leonardo da Vinci Award – an annual Sidney Edelstein Prize is given out for outstanding scholarship in technology scholarship with an award of $3,500 and plaque presented each year.

The Hillman Foundation’s Canadian Sidney H. Schanberg Prize recognizes journalism that honors its namesake by recognizing discernment of significant news stories, resourcefulness and courage in reporting them, skill in communicating the information to readers/listeners/viewers and its overall societal impact. Starting 2024, three categories for Canadian Sidney Hillman Prizes will be offered: print/digital news reporting/writing; broadcast news (tv/radio/podcast); local/community news.
