The Sidney Prize and Sol Stetin Memorial Prize in Labor History

The Sidney Prize recognizes an outstanding piece of journalism on any particular topic every month. Nominations for this prize can be submitted online until midnight of the last day in any month; winners will be announced on the second Wednesday in any new month and awarded with a $500 honorarium.

The Sidney Awards celebrate not only journalism but also promote the study of history and culture through scholarship that is innovative and insightful. The National Association of Scholars is honored to honor Sidney Hook by honoring works that contribute to knowledge preservation while upholding academic freedom and integrity.

Mercer University will award Ron Rash their 2020 Sidney Lanier Poetry Prize for his collection of poems “Breakfast of Champions.” This prize honors 19th-century Southern writer Sidney Lanier for his dedication to writing about his region, and forms part of their John Parris Distinguished Writer Series event series.

Annie Zhang won the 2023 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize with her story ‘Who Rattles the Night?’ The judges, which sought original stories that address travel themes creatively, included Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop, and Sara Saleh. Annie will have their story published by Overland while two runners-up stories will also appear online. Annie lives on unceded Wangal land and has written or edited for publications including Island Magazine, Kill Your Darlings Magazine and Big Issue as well as WestWords Western Sydney Emerging Writer Fellow Fellowship program with work included in ‘The Big Book of Australian Ghost Stories’ collection of works published.

Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award of this year’s Sidney Film Prize recognizes an emerging NSW-based filmmaker working in short film with a cash prize of $7,000. The winning short is selected based on its innovation, imagination and high impact by filmmakers and industry professionals attending the festival, becoming Academy Award eligible.

The Sol Stetin Memorial Prize in Labor History was created annually to commemorate and pay homage to this pioneer of labor history who believed that an independent press is key in creating an equitable society. Roberts & Holland LLP will award its winner with $1,000.

Sidney Hillman, who inspired The Sidney Hillman Foundation with his belief in an independent press being essential in creating an equitable society, lived by this philosophy himself. Today, The Hillman Foundation continues his legacy by honoring journalists who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling that serves the greater good for the common good – thus encouraging other journalists to continue the pursuit of truth, human rights and social justice through investigative reporting and deep storytelling – so as to be eligible for one of The Hillman Awards’ three criteria – truth reporting/deep storytelling/common good.
